Sobre Este Material

The bottom plate (also called the sole plate) is the horizontal framing member at the base of each wall section, to which all vertical studs are nailed. It serves as the foundation connection for the wall and transfers loads to the floor system or foundation below. Bottom plates match the stud width — 2x4 for 2x4 walls, 2x6 for 2x6 walls. Any bottom plate in direct contact with concrete or masonry must be pressure-treated lumber rated for ground contact (UC4A or UC4B). Interior bottom plates on wood subfloors can use standard untreated lumber. Common board lengths are 8, 12, and 16 feet, with longer boards preferred to reduce the number of joints. Joints in bottom plates should fall over studs or over solid blocking. Bottom plates are cut from the same lumber as the wall studs, so costs are comparable — $4 to $8 for 8-foot PT boards and $3 to $6 for untreated boards.

Dicas de Instalação

  • Use PT lumber for all exterior bottom plates.
  • Snap a chalk line before laying plates for accuracy.
  • Pre-drill for anchor bolts before final positioning.

Erros Comuns a Evitar

  • Using regular lumber for exterior/garage bottom plates that contact concrete.
  • Not snapping a layout line — causes wavy walls.
